MW Productions, Inc. began in 1984 as a partnership between Doug Weihnacht, a television news reporter, producer, and editor, and Berry Minott, a producer and production manager for corporate clients and video post-production houses. Originally formed to make training and industrial films for corporate and non-profit clients, the company soon began to develop, design and produce documentaries, educational films and interactive media.

The pair received initial success from in-depth documentaries such as From the Floor of the Convention (1985), winner of the ACE Award for Best Cable TV Documentary, and Longshoremen and Automation (1986), narrated by Ed Asner and screened at numerous festivals nationwide. Other projects received extensive PBS broadcast, including Halfway to Hell: The Men Who Built the Golden Gate Bridge (1989), and Hanging Iron (1990), a look at the 1989 San Francisco earthquake.

In the 1990’s, MW Productions expanded into cultural, historical and international themes, first with Harry Bridges: A Man and his Union (1992), a portrait of one of America's most controversial labor leaders. The film received several prestigious prizes including the Columbia-Dupont Award and the Golden Gate Award for Best Documentary at the San Francisco Film Festival, and was screened at festivals around the world including Sundance, Hawaii and Sydney before airing nationally on PBS.

Kansai - Japan's Ancient Capital Emerges Again (1992) was MW Productions’ first international production, funded by both Japanese and U.S. sources. The one-hour film received national PBS distribution. Soon thereafter, Cut Loose: New American Furniture Makers (1993) established the producers’ cultural documentary reputation by capturing the CINE Golden Eagle at the Film Arts Festival, followed by screenings at other festivals as well.

In education, MW Productions has established itself as one of the premiere producers for broadcast and new media. Current broadcast productions include CSRD: Comprehensive School Reform for the U.S. Department of Education and Figuring On Families, a one-hour math and lifestyle program to be narrated by Whoopie Goldberg and funded by the National Science Foundation.

MW Productions is also producing an interactive, video-based CD-ROM for the National Science Foundation that retraces the steps and the science of Charles Darwin in Voyage to Galapagos. Other projects in development include the development of internet portal for school reform, an interactive CD-ROM for technical career training, and a PBS documentary series on the history of biodiversity science.
